Take a look at the amount the average Nashville family spends during the holidays — and how to combat the holiday stress of financial strain.
Nashville holiday spending stacks up well compared to the national average, which is estimated at $877.22 each season. For some cities across the nation, families of four are spending more than $1,000 on basic holiday purchases, NerdWallet reports.
Unfortunately, holiday costs can sometimes have a negative effect on mental health. The National Alliance on Mental Illness reports that 68 percent of respondents say the holidays contribute to feelings of financial strain, 66 percent experience loneliness, 63 percent experience too much pressure and 57 percent experience unrealistic expectations.
NAMI suggests the following steps to avoid the holiday blues and combat holiday stress:
- Stick to normal routines as much as possible.
- Remember to make time for yourself. A trip to the dog park, a manicure or a yoga class will do wonders for your mood.
- Don’t overindulge. A treat here and there is great, but don’t turn to food and alcohol for solace if you’re feeling down.
- Get exercise — even if it’s just a quick walk after dinner. Winter weather affecting your workout? One Vanderbilt expert offers tips for staying active this season, including ways to get your kids moving.
