From orchard to table: Bite into warm apple crisp. A taste of fall is just a recipe away.

Grab those bruised apples or your proudest orchard picks and turn them into a delectable fall treat. This old-fashioned apple crisp contains less butter and sugar, making it a lighter version of your grandmother’s traditional recipe.

Recipe: Old-Fashioned Apple Crisp

Serves: 8 servings
  • 4 cups apples, peeled and diced
  • ½ cup old-fashioned rolled oats
  • 1/3 cup all-purpose or whole wheat flour
  • 1/3 cup white or brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • ¼ cup unsalted butter, cold (cut into chunks)
  • ¼ cup dried fruit (optional)
  • ¼ cup chopped nuts (optional)
  1. Preheat oven to 375°F.
  2. Spray the bottom of an 8-inch round or square pan with cooking spray.
  3. Spread diced apples on the bottom of the pan.
  4. In a large bowl, add sugar and cut in butter using a pastry cutter or fork. Stir in the oats, flour, sugar, cinnamon and salt. Add dried fruit or nuts, if desired.
  5. Sprinkle flour mixture evenly over apples.
  6. Bake, uncovered, for about 25 minutes or until topping is golden and fruit is bubbly. Serve warm.

Try substituting one, 29-ounce can of sliced peaches in light syrup (drained) in place of apples.[br]Chopped nuts such as walnuts or pecans, or other types of dried fruit such as cherries are great optional add-ins.[br]This is a delicious, money-saving way to use apples that are bruised or are nearing the end of their edible life.
