You don’t need to break the bank to have fun on your Tennessee staycation when school takes a break.

1. Pickett State Park.
Stay in a rustic stone cabin built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s and have firewood delivered to your door. Go hiking on the 58 miles of trails, many of which are family friendly and lead to natural arches. At night, indulge in some stargazing. Pickett is a certified dark sky viewing location. Pickett is located in the upper Cumberland Mountains just northeast of Jamestown, Tennessee.
2. Adventure Science Center.
Nashville offers science lovers young and old plenty of opportunity to get some hands-on experience. From its Little Labs programs for kids (ages 3 to 5) to Dino Rumble, which is fun for all ages, no one will get bored on an excursion. Just the Adventure Tower alone could keep the family busy all day with its music, space, health and other innovative exhibits — not to mention its incredible views of the Nashville skyline.
3. Become a Junior Ranger.
Kids who visit both the Chickamauga Battlefield and Lookout Mountain Battlefield can become Junior Rangers of the Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park. Each child will receive a badge, book and certificate to commemorate the achievement. Both battlefields feature hiking trails, monuments and historical tablets, and are a perfect way to engage kids in a history lesson while enjoying the outdoors.
4. My Big Backyard.
Located inside the Memphis Botanic Garden, My Big Backyard is a family day-trip dream come true. It’s a place for romping around, digging, creating and learning. All ages can enjoy this outdoor garden, which features activities like fort building or expending energy on tunnels and slides. Art installations are around every corner, so family members are bound to take home a dose of inspiration for their own yards.
