Get out and get active while enjoying the colors of fall as a family.
Fall is definitely one of my favorite times of year here in Middle Tennessee. Not only are the temperatures cooler, but our area also offers many beautiful natural resources to explore locally.
While our fall calendar tends to be pretty full with school activities and soccer, we love to spend time outside enjoying the colors of autumn as a family.
Here are six ideas for family activities this fall that will get you out and active:
1. Fall nature hike
Take your kids to a local park and hit one of the trails. Most parks offer a variety of trails that vary in difficulty.
2. Geocaching
Geocaching is one of the coolest ways to connect with your kids while learning about local landmarks and bonding while working toward a common goal. Think of it as a GPS-guided treasure hunt. You can download a geocaching app for free or minimal cost and have fun exploring for hours.
3. Biking
We are fortunate to live very close to Nashville’s greenway system, which offers perfect trails for biking and walking. If you have younger kids, a bike trailer is perfect for hauling your kids around while you get exercise.
4. Camping
You don’t have to rent an RV for a weekend to have a memorable camping experience. You can keep it simple and camp in your backyard. Stock up on ingredients for s’mores and everyone will be happy!
5. Apple picking
Head to a local apple orchard and spend a day picking apples. Have your kids decide on a recipe or two to make together once you return. Share your kitchen creations (and your recipes) with a friend or neighbor. See our Apples 101: A guide to fall’s favorite fruit for information on apple varieties.
6. Raking leaves
What if you surprised one of your neighbors this fall by offering to rake leaves? Perhaps you know a family who has a new baby or an elderly couple who could use an extra hand around the house. My girls love to rake leaves and this is a great way to do a good deed while enjoying fall’s glory.
